SPIEGEL INTERVIEW WITH FOOTBALL LEGEND OLIVER KAHN
'Goalkeepers Need an Element of Insanity'
Oliver Kahn will play his last match for Bayern Munich this Saturday ending a hugely successful
20-year soccer career. The legendary goalkeeper spoke to SPIEGEL about his occassional bouts of insanity, what he learned
from being left on the bench during the 2006 World Cup and how his plans for retirement include searching for emptiness.
SPIEGEL: Mr. Kahn, the one word that most aptly describes your career is insanity. One of your most famous
insane moments happened during a 1999 match against Borussia Dortmund, when you almost bit the other team's forward, Heiko
Herrlich, in the neck and almost delivered a Kung Fu kick to his fellow player, Stéphane Chapuisat. What's your take on these
incidents, now that you have the wisdom of age?
Oliver Kahn: I'm reminded of those scenes almost monthly on some TV program or another. It just happened to
be a highly emotional match, in which I truly overstepped the mark. But it was in fact harmless, because nothing actually
happened. I would certainly not have bitten Heiko Herrlich, and I was three meters away from Chapuisat.
Stockport County have placed a six figure bid down on the table for an unamed goalkeeper. With John Ruddy
and Conrad Logan both being on loan at Edgeley Park last season it is highly likely that it the goalkeeper is one of those
two.Ruddy is at Everton, and it was always thought that a big bid would be accepted as Everton have plenty of cover, with
Ruddy finding himself as low as number four. With Tim Howard taking the number one slot, Stefan Wessels having number two
this season and Iain Turner has the number three. But rumours are going round that Everton are interested in two goalkeepers
from the Championship, ex County player Wayne Hennessey and Birmingham City keeper Maik Taylor. Meanwhile, with Leicester
City being relegated to League One, it is likely a bid would be accepted for Conrad Logan too. It is then likely that County
would then go for a younger, cheaper, number two to back up the more expensive number one. That figure is likely to be Ben
Hinchliffe, who has been released by Derby County and County are leading the race to sign him.Hinchcliffe has played for County
in friendlies towards the end of last season, and reserve games. Darlington are also in the race to sign Hinchcliffe, with
their number one moving onto greater heights at Fulham this season. We'll have news of any signings as soon as we get it.
INTERVIEW-Soccer-Goalkeepers are no fun any more, says Higuita

opposing forwards in his own penalty area, complains...
WANDERERS are believed to be lining up a £5million move for Spurs and England
goalkeeper Paul Robinson.Bolton boss Gary Megon has joined Aston Villa in the race to tempt the troubled keeper to the Reebok
as a replacement for Jussi Jaaskelainen. The future of the Finland international is uncertain although new contract talks were
reopend this week.
SPURS are lining up a bid for Rangers keeper Allan McGregor. The 26-year-old Ibrox No.1's outstanding form this season has
attracted the attention of several Premiership clubs.McGregor is contracted at Gers until summer 2010 and valued at more than
£5million. Tottenham boss Juande Ramos is aware of the keeper's ability after glowing recommendations from his scouts.
Millwall sign goalkeeper Millwall
have signed Cardiff City keeper David Forde on a two-year dealLions boss Kenny Jackett said: "He did very well in his loan spells in League One
last season and I believe he will prove an excellent acquisition for us. "I've known about David for some time
since he was playing up the road at Cardiff when I was manager of Swansea." Forde added: "I'm delighted to be signing
for Millwall who are an ambitious club with real potential to be playing at a higher level."
Great Goalkeepers, Can we do it?
Unfortunately it's an already an old story that we have got a shortage of top class goalkeepers. Top
Premiership Clubs' Academies can not really boast that they have produced anyone worth writing home about. Small goalkeeping
school's, however good they are, can only bring up a goalkeeper to a certain level which is still falling short of rivaling
top class young european goalkeepers. Even some privately owned academies who can certainly do good work, are producing
goalkeepers...

Goalkeeper Scott Carson has called for Liverpool to place a realisticprice tag on his
head as he revealed his desire to sort out his long-term future.Carson spent the 2007-2008 campaign on loan to Aston Villa
in a £1.5million deal after having previously experienced similar spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton.Villa manager
Martin O'Neill is considering his goalkeeping options for next season with Thomas Sorensen poised to leave now that his contract
has come to an end. But, wherever his future lies, 22-year-old Carson wants a fair price to be asked by the Reds for his services. There
has been speculation that Rafael Benitez will be asking around £10million for Carson. The England keeper said: "It's too much
(Liverpool's valuation). It's stupid money really. You pay £10million for a goalkeeper who is 27, 28 and the finished article."To
be honest, I'm far from the finished article. I have got another five years of learning."I don't think Liverpool are stupid.
They know what I'm worth. They would have recouped what they paid for me in loan fees over the last couple of years."So hopefully,
they can help me out and if there is a sniff of going somewhere, then hopefully they will respect my wishes and help me that
way."Carson added: "I would like to get settled but it's not up to me. Whether it's Villa or anyone else, it's up to them
to try to sort it out."I haven't got a clue what's happening. I haven't even spoken to Liverpool."But I want to play football.
I have played football for the last two seasons and I don't think I will be content with sitting on the bench."I still don't
know what's around the corner. I have got a couple of weeks now to think about what's going to happen."As it stands, I go
back to Liverpool but I want to be playing first-team football. Liverpool have got a great keeper in Pepe Reina and he's going
to take a lot of shifting."It might be the time for me to move on but I don't know Rafa's thoughts and I don't know if anyone
is going to agree a fee with Liverpool. It's going to be an interesting couple of weeks."
Alex can tolerate football agents
First team coach Steve Holland says Crewe Alexandra will have to tolerate working with football agents as they
look to make summer signings...Both Ben Williams and Owain fon Williams have rejected new contracts, leaving the Alex without
a keeper.
"I've had a few messages from agents throwing various different goalkeepers at me," said Holland.
Arsenal chasing Wolves keeperJamesHennessey Exclusive by James Nursey
Arsenal head a clutch of Premier League clubs chasing Wolves keeper Wayne
Hennessey as boss Arsene Wenger mulls over an £8million bid.The Wales international, 21, is on the Emirates
radar after a string of impressive displays for club and country.Wolves insist publicly that Hennessey
is not for sale as Mick McCarthy's side aim for automatic promotion next season. But the Molineux powerbrokers
know every player has a price, despite the 6ft 4in youngster signing a new four-year contract in January.Wenger
badly needs a new keeper as Jens Lehmann's imminent return to Germany on a free this summer will leave him with just Manuel
Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski.Hennessey kept 21 clean sheets this term - and another last night as Wales
won in Iceland. And Wenger is now pondering whether to splash out on Hennessey as as Aston Villa, Everton
and Middlesbrough are also very keen.

A Gunner comes calling: Class of Almunia
It was a typical hot summer afternoon at Jess Arabian Ranches and on any other day, you could bet the school’s
young footballers would have stayed indoors instead of turning up for a practice session. However, this was no ordinary day
but a once in a lifetime opportunity to get a coaching lesson from Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia. And they would be willing
to risk...
The Daily Mail reports that Spurs manager Juande Ramos has identified Manchester City's impressive young goalkeeper,
Joe Hart, as the outstanding prospect in that position in England, and wants him between the posts at White Hart Lane as he
builds a team capable of challenging the Big Four's Premier League dominance next season.Hart, 21, has just been called up
to Fabio Capello's England squad - despite making just 27 League appearances for City since joining them from Shrewsbury Town
in May 2006 for £600,000.He is regarded as an outstanding prospect, but is one of several at Eastlands who are disillusioned
and unsettled by events off the pitch, in particular the elbowing aside of manager Sven Goran Eriksson by owner Thaksin Shinawatra. That
has encouraged Spurs to believe they can tempt Hart to London. They apparently value the keeper, who stands 6ft 3ins tall,
at around £6million, but are prepared to offer that in cash plus Paul Robinson to secure a deal.Former England keeper Robinson,
who endured a miserable season at both club and international level, is on his way out of the Lane and would ge a £4m sweetener
or makeweight in the Hart deal.Robinson, 28, has also attracted interest from Middlesbrough and Aston Villa. He would
almost certainly be undisputed number one at City, with fellow keepers Kasper Schmeichel and Andreas Isaksson expected to
leave this summer, and have the chance to rebuild his confidence and career in a new environment.

Tommy Wright has accepted a role as goalkeeping coach at Norwich City. Wright

Joe Lewis began his season trying to get a game on loan at Morecambe, in the Blue Square Premier. He has
ended it playing against David Beckham in an England training session in the Caribbean. From the Shrimps to the big fish of
English football in 10 months – it has been a remarkable rise for the goalkeeper who has just won promotion to League
One with Peterborough. The 20-year-old, who has played for the England Under-21s, was brought in by Fabio
Capello after an injury to Wigan's Chris Kirkland. He earns £60,000 a year, roughly half what Rio Ferdinand pulls in a week,
but he does have one thing in common with the Manchester United and England defender, and Beckham. They all know what it is
like to have a Ferguson for a manager – in Lewis's case Sir Alex's son, Darren.Joe Hart, 21, of
Manchester City is a more likely starter tomorrow against Trinidad & Tobago, but Lewis is regarded...
Villa have first choice to sign Scott Carson but will not pay anything like the £10million fee written into his loan agreement. They

end of the scale, including bringing former Arsenal shotstopper Jens Lehmann to the club on a short-term deal.
